HANCOCK, Wis. (WSAW) – A farmer from Hancock has been inducted into the Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Affiliation Corridor of Fame for his lifelong contributions to the business.
Paul Miller is the president of Paul Miller Farms, Inc. He works along with his household elevating 2,800 acres of greens, together with potatoes, candy corn, snap beans and peas, and rising 525 acres of carrots for Chook’s Eye Meals and Del Monte.
He was formally honored at a banquet Feb. 9 in Stevens Level.
He mentioned he grew up on his circle of relatives’s farm, began by his great-great-grandparents within the 1850′s, in Beaver Dam. There, he vividly remembers plowing a subject on the age of 8. Miller graduated from the College of Wisconsin-Platteville, in 1965. He then labored for Inexperienced Big, returning to Beaver Dam.
Two years later, he left Inexperienced Big and turn out to be the farm supervisor for Badger Growers, a 1,000-acre inexperienced bean and candy corn operation situated in Hancock. Along with elevating snap beans and candy corn, Miller grew potatoes for American Potato (which later turned Fundamental American Meals). In 1990, he and his two kids purchased all of the belongings of Badger Growers and fashioned Paul Miller Farms, Inc., a 1,100-acre irrigated potato and vegetable operation.
“There have been instances when being a potato and vegetable grower has been difficult,” Paul admits. “I had neighbors within the space after we began rising for American Potato, and 9 of us went in collectively, forming kind of a coop. It was like old-time farming after they thrashed grain. When it was time for potato harvest, 5 of us had vans and there have been two potato harvesters, and we’d go from farm to farm, neighbor to neighbor, harvesting potatoes. That’s the place it began.”
The farm has continued to develop through the years. Immediately, together with rented land, the Millers farm 2,800 acres of potatoes and greens in Waushara County, all below irrigation. Along with processing vegetable manufacturing, Gramma Miller’s Farm Market is open seasoning, promoting recent produce in season, flowers, canned items, meats, honey, maple syrup and regionally grown and produced wines. A 3-acre subject is devoted to specialty crops for the farm market, reminiscent of tomatoes, squash, peppers, cucumbers, pumpkins, Brussels sprouts, eggplant, melons, gourds and Indian corn.
